Founded in 1939, the National Film Board (NFB) of Canada is a public body that produces and distributes films and other audiovisual material .

The NFB established its media library in the 1940s to archive its own films and offer other production companies the opportunity to use their material . 

Today, the NFB collection is recognized as a Canadian national treasure, as much for its historical value as the excellent quality of its productions both on filmed media and, more recently, in High Definition .

This 4,000-hour collection, covering the period from 1895 to the present, contains images of World Wars I and II, the Depression, industrialization, scientific discoveries, urban and rural lifestyles, fauna and flora, and more. The collection is continually expanding, with new sequences being added to the archives every day .

In 2004, the National Film Board of Canada entrusted GP archives with the task of making its images available to the French market .
